Alice Walker, born in Georgia in 1944, overcame a disadvantaged sharecropping background, blindness in one eye, and the tense times of the Civil Rights Movement to become one of the world's most respected African American writers. While attending college, Walker began to draw on both her personal tragedies and those of her community to write poetry, essays, short stories, and novels that would tell the virtually untold stories of oppressed African and African American women, providing them with hope and inspiring activisim. Perhaps best known for her novel The Color Purple (1982), which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1983 and became a controversial film three years later, Walker has introduced and developed womanist theory, criticism and practice, and continues to champion the causes of women of color. Author: Gerri Bates. Hardback. (240 pages)
Contents: The Life of Alice Walker; Literary Contexts; The Third Life of Grange Copeland (1970); Meridian (1976); The Color Purple (1982); The Temple of My Familiar (1989); Possessing the Secret of Joy (1992); By the Light of My Father's Smile (1998); The Way Forward Is with a Broken Heart (2000); Now Is the Time to Open Your Heart (2004); Bibliography.

A Concise Encyclopedia of Austen's World

This book features lively, and often humorous, entries that illuminate Jane Austen's world.
Willoughby (Sense and Sensibility) drives a curricle not a gig — what does this say about him? Captain Wentworth (Persuasion) and Fanny's brother William (Mansfield Park) follow the 'King's Service' at sea — what sort of life did they find there? Lady Catherine de Bourgh (Pride and Prejudice) is called Lady Catherine, not Lady de Bourgh — what does this very important distinction signify? More than 70 alphabetically arranged entries provide fascinating historical details on the form and function of everyday and obscure objects that are mentioned in her novels. Jane Austen's first readers would have needed no help in understanding references to their everyday lives. But early nineteenth-century card games, dining habits, social etiquette, occupations and dozens of other topics are not immediately clear to her readers nearly two hundred years later. In this encyclopedia, students of Jane Austen will become familiar with what her characters ate, wore and did for recreation. You can learn here about the domestic items, the social scene, the workplace, the church, special events and rituals, and everyday customs that constituted life in Jane Austen's England. Author: Kirstin Olsen. (400 pages)

Mike Marqusee shows how Bob Dylan's great works of the 60's were highly charged with political and social concerns. Blues and Folk first led Bob Dylan to politics. Politics – responses to the civil rights movement and the threat of nuclear war – then unleashed his astonishing song-writing ability. It tells of his reluctance to be pigeonholed and of his quest for an American identity – also of the way folk tradition, modernism and commercial popular culture were fused in his work. Hardback. The Da Vinci Code has created an extraordinary controversy, with its sub-plots of the sacred feminine in religion, the bloodline of Christ, the legend of the Holy Grail, and the role of sects like Opus Dei within the church. This Rough Guide explores and explains the context of the novel, including:
  • How the early Christian Church ‘edited’ The Bible, and drew on earlier religions.
  • What art historians make of Leonardo Da Vinci’s symbolism in "The Last Supper" and other works.
  • The true history of the Holy Grail, the Priory of Sion, and the debate on Mary Magdalene and the bloodline of Christ.
  • Location guides to Da Vinci Code sites in Paris, Rome, Jerusalem, New York, London and Edinburgh.
  • Reviews of Da Vinci Code sources and a glossary of everything from the Templars to the Fibonaccci Sequence.
  • Whatever you think of Dan Brown’s novel, this Rough Guide has the key to understanding its wider background!

Stephen King is a literary phenomenon — spanning many genres, from horror and fantasy to psychological thrillers and science fiction. In all, he has written more than 500 original works. His short stories in particular have won critical recognition. This thoughtful study of King's immense body of work shows how King builds on the work of writers from Stoker and Shelley to Dickens and Melville. It demonstrates how King shatters our illusions of safety and control by placing decent and good characters at the mercy of indifferent forces. King himself is very self-deprecating about his own work (he has described himself as 'the literary equivalent of a Big Mac') but this study shows how his work is informed by both the Gothic tradition and by the great naturalists — and his popular success is underpinned by deep sophistication. This is an excellent explanation of the techniques that King uses to achieve his effects. Author: Heidi Strengell.
